The cat’s out of the (gym) bag!
With the Winter Olympics well underway, PEOPLE is taking a deep dive into the lives of Team USA athletes and figuring out what goes into the making of an Olympic champion. Unsurprisingly, nothing is more crucial to an Olympian than a perfectly stocked gym bag.
PEOPLE sits down with a few figure skaters from Team USA to find out the items they rely on to help them train for Olympic gold.
All of the athletes packed the basics like skates, sports drinks, foam rollers and stretching bands, but each Olympian also brings something special.
In addition to the more practical items in her bag, Alexa Knierim — a pairs who competed alongside her husband Chris Knierim — reveals that she always packs some flair.
“In my gym bag I have skates, my guards, sparkly gloves, sparkly leg warmers and anything else that shines,” Alexa tells PEOPLE.
Figure skater Adam Rippon says that there’s always one important electronics item in his gym bag — but it’s not always functional.
“My headphones, which I always forget to charge so they’re usually dead and so basically they are like a decoration inside my gym bag,” Rippon confesses.
Catch these athletes and the rest of Team USA in action when the 2018 Winter Olympics start on Feb. 9 with the Opening Ceremonies in PyeongChang, South Korea, on NBC.
